Exploring Greece: The Artistic Inspiration Behind My ‘Milos’ Painting

I painted “Milos” after spending a few days on the island of Milos in Greece. Taylor and I took a long trip to Greece in 2023 and got to explore several different islands that were a little off the beaten path. Our arrival to Milos was a little rocky, as we took a boat from Paros over to the island and nearly everyone on it got seasick. Thankfully we didn’t, but the ride wasn’t very peaceful. Hot tip: stick to the cruise ship sized ferries when traveling between islands to avoid sea sickness lol. However, once we arrived, we fell in love.

Chalky White Cliffs

The island was full of tall white cliffs and the water was a bright turquoise blue that darkened into a sapphire blue as it got deeper. It was so gorgeous, maybe the most beautiful water I’ve ever seen. The terrain on the island was different from any of the other islands we went to because the cliffs were super white and almost kind of chalky. Milos is known for its stunning white rocks that have been eroded away by water, wind, and salt, giving off the quintessential “Greece” feeling with all the white rock and blue water.

The roads on the island were super rough and everyone recommended that we get a Jeep to drive around in, so there we were, driving on these bumpy roads in a rented Jeep! Taylor did an amazing job of driving us around and maneuvering over the rocks and bumps. The adventure was worth it for the stunning views around every corner.

Off the Beaten Path

The island was also not as touristy as some of the others, but whenever we mentioned to someone that we were going to Milos, they got really excited for us and told us that we were going to love it (they weren’t wrong!).

We stayed at a hotel called Skinopi Lodge , which was built into the hillside and had an amazing view over the water. We arrived just as the sun was setting, casting a golden glow directly into our room and lighting up the cliffs and sea below. I couldn’t stop taking photos of the sunsets and sunrises there! The lodge was actually built on an old Obsidian Mine, and the surrounding area was full of ancient artifacts like arrowheads—it felt like we were staying in a piece of history, and the vibe was unlike anywhere else on earth.

I’m a huge Mamma Mia fan, so it felt surreal to finally be in Greece, eating delicious Greek food, and chatting with locals as we traveled around. It was like stepping into a dream, and everything I’d hoped Greece would be was even better than I imagined. I can’t wait to go back!
